2 Words That Will Change Your Life

A couple of months ago, my mom (hey, mama!) had told me about choosing one word as your focus word for the year and sticking with that. I can’t recall where she heard it from, but I thought it was a great idea. Instead of focusing on a laundry list of goals, simply dedicate your energy to working on whatever word you choose for the year.

Cool, I got that.

So, in thinking about what I wanted my word to be for 2018, I came up with two. I know it said one, but mind your business.

Both words honestly go hand in hand, but for 2018, my focus is on being disciplined and being consistent in everything that I set out to do. Discipline is extremely important because it’s there even when the motivation is gone. Even when you don’t feel like it, the drive is gone, and you feel like giving up, discipline is there to keep you moving toward the things you need to do.

For me, being disciplined means doing the things you need to do even when you don’t feel like it. Sometimes I may not want to work, I may not want to write, I may not feel like doing the things I need to do, but they have to get done, and being disciplined will ensure that they get done regardless of how I feel.

Being consistent is also very important, and as I said, it ties into being disciplined. It’s about finishing what you started, giving the same energy to things as you did when you first started and creating a standard that is something you can be proud of.

Consistency and discipline apply to every area of my life, whether it’s business, personal, or even the relationships I have with people. The work has to be done, and for me, it has to be done to the best of my ability even when I’m tired and don’t feel like it.

There are no excuses.

This year is going to be amazing, and at the end of 2018, I will be more disciplined and more consistent in every area of my life.

What is your focus word for 2018?

Hey now! The book is called My One Word by Mike Ashcroft & Rachel Olsen. Like your two words. Team work we will stay focused and 2018 will be Epic!

  • Tiffany Griffin

I like your two words! I chose two words for 2018 as well. I had a hard time choosing just one word. My words are Manifest and Surrender.

  • Jay Colby

I love the mantra you’re adopting this year great two words to focus on any 2018. I wish you the best on your goal for 2018!

  • Tomiko

My word is opportunity! I will be ready when the opportunity arises. I won’t have to do research or figure it out.. I’m waiting on my opportunity

  • Ola

this year I’ve heard so much talk about adopting a focus word. At my age, I’d probably forget the word halfway into the new year. Ha, ha, ha!

  • Sapphire Kharyzma

Great words! Mine is consistency, so we agree *wink* I feel like being consistent is a discipline, so you’re on the right track!

I am very glad to come across this. I chose a focus word last year but have yet to do so this year. For me, it would have to be “engagement”
Not just with others, but full engagement in self, work, and life in all capacities.

  • Ramona

Great post. My focus word for 2018 is “new.” I want to do new things, go new places and have new adventures. This will push me out of my comfort zone.

  • Terri

I didn’t think about the whole “one word focus” thing until after the 1st. Now that I know, I think I’ll break the rules like you and pick two: Be known. This year I really want to focus on getting my name out there – AKA hustle till I no longer need to introduce myself.

See, my two words go hand in hand too!

  • Bernetta

Yes. You mom is right. discipline was my word last year and honestly, I need to make it my word again this year. You can’t go wrong with being disciplined and consistent.

  • Natasha

You would think serving in the military for 6 years would make me disciplined and for the most part I am, but not NEARLY as much as I was while IN the military. Thanks for the reminder!

  • Joanna

My focus words for this year is balance. I can’t be all work and no play or all play and no work. I have such a busy life and need to learn how to balance everything that I’m doing.

  • Monique

I like your words, and like you said, the go hand-in-hand, so you get a pass.
